Solar Photo Voltaic (PV)
A photovoltaic cell produces electricity when direct sunlight shines on it. Enthusiasts
wishing to understand the science and baffle their buddies Wikipedia for you.
What you need to know
- There different types of PV technology. Mono-crystalline and Poly Crystalline are
the main ones used domestically in the UK.
- PV panels are attached to you roof, walls, garage or arboretum
- They produce Direct Current electricity
- This is converted to AC, 230V AC in the UK in an inverter
- This connects to the electricity grid if G83 compliant
How works in your house
- The suns shines and generates electricity
- This reduces what you need to buy from the grid
- Any left over is sent onto the grid to your neighbours
Making Money from your PV electricity
- Every Unit of electricity you make is 1 less you buy
As of April 2010 you will be paid for (Feed in Tariffs) (Case Study)
- Every unit of electricity you produce whether used or exported
- Every unused unit you export
According to the EST
- A typical home PV system can produce around 40% of the electricity a household uses
in a year.
-
Store electricity for a cloudy day?
- if your home isn't connected to the national grid you can store excess electricity
in batteries to use when you need it.
