Eco 5 Hydrogen house
Background
Berwickshire Housing Association are one of the leading housing associations when it comes to trying and learning about new technology. With their very much "can do" attidute and partial funding support from the Scottish Governments Fuel Cell Support Scheme they have been able to build a domestic residence which aims to be fully off-grid. Some of the highlights of the projects include:
Highly efficient building design
Whole house ventillation and heat recovery
Grey water system for toilet flushing, hot and washing water
6kW Wind Turbine in the garden
5.7kW of PV on house roof
6.26m.sq of solar thermal evacuated tubes
90Nm.cu of underground hydrogen storage and 255 Ah at 48v battery bank
Hydrogen and battery storage provides nearly 4 weeks of autonomy with no renewable input
1000l of stratified thermal storage tank provides 20-65kWh of storage
5kWe input/15slpm 10Bar output Electrolyser with heat recovery
5kWe output Fuel Cell with heat recovery
Common Rail Energy System
ReGenTech have ensured that all electrical systems are on a common 48vDC electrical bus. This makes the addition or removal of power very easy. The thermal system too uses a stratified 1000l thermal accumulator tank. All heat loads and sources are commoned by the tank.
Every Joule is a prisoner
The site will have a mains AC and natural gas grid connection for any occasion that system servecing is required. We do also have the option to export unused electricity to the grid - this is not required, however it means we dont have to shut down renewable energy production if storage is full. The system has been designed to ensure that grid reliance will be minimised only to servicing. Due to our confidence, there is no automatic transfer to grid.
